Exclusion
A specific situation or cause of loss a policy explicitly does not cover.
What it actually means
Exclusions are written into every policy to define what's not covered — flood and earthquake are classic homeowners insurance exclusions, requiring separate policies. Reading the exclusions section is often more revealing than reading the coverage section.
Example: Standard homeowners policies almost universally exclude flood damage, which is why separate flood insurance exists.
